Sam Spade is a partner in a detective agency who finds himself in trouble with the police when his partner is killed while trying to follow a man. The lady who asked him to follow the man turns out te be completely lying and is really searching for something called the Maltese Falcon, which is a statue of a falcon with precious jems, and jewels in it.
