The Reversal by Michael Connelly

Mickey Haller: Book 3

This is another courtroom thriller by Michael Connelly.   In this, Haller temporarily switches to the prosecution.  He is teamed with his first wife and mother of his daughter, who is a first rate prosecutor and now sits second chair for political reasons.   He is also teamed with Harry Bosch as his investigator.

Good story of a man who gets a "reversal" based on DNA evidence.

Longtime defense attorney Mickey Haller is recruited to change stripes and prosecute the high-profile retrial of a brutal child murder. After 24 years in prison, convicted killer Jason Jessup has been exonerated by new DNA evidence. Haller is convinced Jessup is guilty, and he takes the case on the condition that he gets to choose his team: his second chair is his first wife, seasoned prosecutor nicknamed Maggie McFierce, and his investigator, LAPD Detective Harry Bosch. Together, Bosch, McPhereson, and Haller set off on a case fraught with political and personal danger. Opposing them is Jessup, now out on bail, a defense attorney, Clever Clive, who excels at manipulating the media, and a runaway eyewitness reluctant to testify after so many years. With the odds and the evidence against them, Bosch and Haller must nail a sadistic killer once and for all. If Bosch is sure of anything, it is that Jason Jessup plans to kill again.

The Lincoln Lawyer by Michael Connelly

The first book in the Mickey Haller series and an interesting tale of how the rich attempt to get away with crimes.  Nothing special but an engaging story.

The Whole Enchilada by Diane Mott Davidson

Another in the Goldy Schulz series.   These are always simple and light, but enjoyable.   The usual set of villains populates Aspen Meadows,  Goldy gets her share of catering jobs and attacks, and the mystery is solved!

The Hunted by Brian Haig

Really good story of a Russian entrepreneur in the early days of the end of Communism.   It starts with his success and then chronicles the attempts by former KGB and others in the Russian government to bring him down.

Even better when you find out that this is based on a true story!

Murderville by Ashley & JaQuavis

This one is pretty trashy but the characters are intriguing.   The two main characters start out in Sierra Leone.   When they run from danger in the village, they inadvertently jump right onto a modern day slave ship.  After coming to America, the boy is involved in the drug trade and the girl ends up as a prostitute.

This is book one of a trilogy.

Lost Girls: An Unsolved American Mystery by Robert Kolker

This tells the story of a series of unsolved murders on Long Island.   Most of the book concerns the lives of the women who were escorts  using Craigslist.   Lots of stories about the women....

David and Goliath Underdogs, Misfits, and the Art of Battling Giants by Malcolm Gladwell

This is another of Gladwell's observation, interview and data books.   This time Gladwell builds on the idea that David's victory over Goliath.   Even though Goliath was so much bigger, David was more nimble and used a weapon that took advantage of the giant's inability to evade David.

From there, Gladwell goes on to explain how dyslexia or losing a parent as a child can be turned into an advantage as the individual learns to compensate with other abilities.
